The Louisa County Animal Shelter operates under guidelines from the Commonwealth of Virginia to temporarily house stray or injured animals, provide for adoption of as many animals as possible and to humanely euthanize unwanted animals. The Shelter strives to encourage, promote, and preserve responsible pet ownership and to prevent any form of cruelty to animals.
The Animal Shelter is staffed by two Shelter Attendants and two Animal Control Officers.
Adoption Fees
$20 for dogs and puppies
$10 for cats and kittens
Adopters are responsible for the cost of all necessary shots plus spaying or neutering.
Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are a vital part of the daily operation of the Shelter. Must understand the importance of spaying and neutering and responsible animal ownership. Understand the Shelter phone is for business use only.

Mature 13 to 17 years old are welcome only on Saturdays with a parent or guardian willing to supervise
Over 18 years old
Understand the Shelter phone is for business use only
Willing to clean as directed
Willing to get along well with people in charge, other volunteers, and the public
Willing to understand the importance of spaying and neutering and responsible animal ownership
Willing to work hard while at the shelter
Must Not Be
Afraid of either dogs or cats
Afraid of getting dirty from the animals
Afraid of seeing injured or sick animals
Volunteer Responsibilities
Cleaning cat and dog cages
Scooping cat litter boxes
Treating all animals humanely
Washing food and water dishes, litter boxes, and of course puppies and dogs
