Coyote Hole Ciderworks

Coyote Hole Ciderworks is run by husband and wife, Chris & Laura Denkers, who moved down to Virginia and Louisa County from upstate New York in 2010. After purchasing 21 acres down the road from their house in 2014, they quickly decided to move forward with their dream that they had been working on for a while to build a hard cidery and plant a small orchard on the land.download (2)

Execution of their plans soon followed with clearing, construction of the tasting room and production, building and planting of the orchards.  Coyote Hole Ciderworks opened its doors on Memorial Day Weekend of 2017.

What is the story behind the name?

"Our name derives from the rich mining history of Mineral. A coyote hole is a prospecting term, where miners would dig a hole prospecting for gold or silver and if they didn’t find anything, the remaining hole would look like a coyote’s hole/den."

Why do you love doing business in Louisa County?

Chris and Laura choose Louisa County for their personal residence as well as their business for several reasons. They love living in Louisa County for the proximity to local conveniences, great people, and being around so many other great businesses.

What's the one thing your business is known for?

The biggest thing that Coyote Hole Ciderworks is known for over its competitors is it’s process in creating it’s hard cider. 100% of its apples and fruit are used from Virginia. All cider and apples are crushed fresh in order to get its great apple taste, and all natural sweetness comes from the addition of fresh pressed cider after fermentation is complete. This brings in more apple, pear or berry flavors into its ciders and also brings in natural sweetness from the fresh pressed cider.

Biggest "win" in your business' history?

During the planning stages of the business plan, the Denkers reached out to the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and Louisa County who worked together and awarded Coyote Hole Ciderworks with a grant. This grant was integral to helping Coyote Hole Ciderworks obtain better equipment which allows for more production and allowed for the hiring of more employees, creating more jobs in Louisa County.

What is your advice for other business owners?

The biggest piece of advice that the Denkers can offer is when you’re thinking about starting a business, make sure you do your homework and create a business plan. The business plan might seem like just a piece of paper, but if you do it correctly, you will do a ton of research on your competitors, location, potential sales and profits and more. This business plan will help you down the road as you can use it to help you get loans, grants, investors and much more. Knowing what you are getting into, how the business is going to run, how other businesses similar to yours runs and potential costs of your business is vital to any success.
